Together with Altenhagen, Hagenburg became 1974 part of the regional community of Sachsenhagen and is regarded as an official spa-area since 1977. Hagenburg is first mentioned in documents dating back to 1378 A.D., as Flecken Hagenborch. Surrounding Hagenburg are large forests as well as moorland and wetlands. Especially worth seeing is the Castle Hagenburg, home of the Counts and Princes from times long past. A rhododendron alley leads you to the castle through the castle forest and along the canal at the Steinhuder Meer. The yacht club with moorage is also located at the Hagenburg Canal. Further tourist attractions are the slab stone church dating back to 1870 A.D., as well as the moorland and ice-age rock garden.
