In earlier times, Steinhude by the Lake was a small fishing- and weaving village, and today is a nationally recognized spa area. Catching fish has a long tradition in Steinhude and is still practised today based on the old methods. The same holds true for the boats that are used by the fishing industry.
Large industrial factories, such as linen weaving, furniture manufacturing, leather manufacturing and Germany's first chocolate factory, were located in Steinhude by the Lake during the 18th and 19th centuries. These do not exist anymore, but the small-town charm has remained. Because of the many restored tudor-style houses, Steinhude has not lost its attractive qualities.
The Fischerkreidag in Steinhude is a typical local street-fair and a popular event during Spring each year. The Festive Weekend in Steinhude is the climax at the end of the Summer season in August and offers every evening fireworks with classical music on the Steinhuder Meer, also named Steinhuder Meer in flames.
